Are You Worth What You Get Paid?

Are you worth what you get paid?

We all have a tendency to equate our worth with our income. We believe that the higher our salary, the more valuable we are. But the truth is, our worth is not determined by our paycheck.

We all know the person in the corner office who shows up late, leaves early and spends all day on the phone NOT talking about business. This person might be getting paid more than what they are worth. In this case, they are overpaid, and not contributing as much as they should be.

On the other hand, you know that person who is always early, stays late, continually getting their boss out of a jam, who gets paid less than what they are worth. This might be you! In this case, the word for them is undervalued. Those employees who contribute more than what they are being compensated for.

Here a few things to look at to determine if you’re worth what you get paid.

👉 Are you meeting or exceeding the expectations set by your employer?

👉 Are you taking on additional responsibilities?

👉 Are you contributing to the success of the company?

These are all factors that can influence your worth.

Another way to determine if you’re worth what you get paid is to compare your salary to others in your industry. If you’re making significantly less than your peers, it might be time to ask for a raise.

However, if you’re making significantly more than your peers, and you’re really not contributing that much more, you may want to ignore this part. But hopefully you will realize this and want to up your game.

It’s important to remember that your worth is not solely determined by your income. Your character, your values, and your contributions to society also play an important role. Focus on developing these aspects of yourself, rather than just focusing on your income.

Now, in my opinion, if you want to truly be paid what you’re worth, become an entrepreneur or a solopreneur. You can choose the fee schedule you want and you can choose who you like to work with. If a potential client doesn’t see the value you bring and wants to tell you what you’re worth, you can choose not to offer your services.

In full transparency, this is the life I have lived for the last 30 years. I have not had a salary or hourly wage in that long. I chose to set my worth and not someone else to do it. This may not be for you, some people need the guarantee and I can understand that. I just know I love what I do and I don’t have to ask my boss for a raise.

How about you?
