Is Your Time Valuable?

Is your time valuable?

.
I know it’s a rhetorical question but stay with me.

A few years ago I had some tests run and the doctor scheduled an appointment with me to go over the results. My wife and I showed up on time for the appointment and waited to be called back.

During our wait, I noticed a sign on the wall that said “If you are more than 15 minutes lates to your appointment you will be charged $25 and worked in as we can or rescheduled.”

I first thought, wow this guy values his time.

We were called back to the room about five minutes past my scheduled time and was told to wait here the doctor would be with us soon. Normal stuff.

Ten minutes, twenty minutes, then thirty minutes passed as we waited. Finally, about thirty-five minutes in the doc came in. No sorry, no boy are we busy, nothing.

I looked at her and said, “my appointment was 40 minutes ago what’s going on?” The response absolutely blew me away. “I was eating lunch, I’m entitled to eat lunch you know.”

I responded great, I agree, where do I send my bill? She had a “what are you talking about” look on her face so I explained.

“Well, I think it’s only fair that if I am more than 15 minutes late you charge me so if you are more than 15 minutes late I charge you.”

The response was, “my time is valuable.” As if mine was not.

What can we learn from this self centered, egotistical doctor?

👉 We need to respect the time of all people.

👉 Remember, nobody’s time is more or less valuable than someone else’s.

👉 Stop thinking the world revolves around you, it doesn’t.

👉 Consider the number of employee meetings you schedule. Especially if your meetings suck and are non-productive.

👉 If you schedule an appointment show up.

Each of us have been designed for a purpose. Respecting someone else’s time is just as important as them respecting yours.
